Day 24
Leipzig
Another morning of travelling on European rail. We knew it would be a bit of a rush to get to Prague station by 8:30am and we did have to hurry but we easily made it, once again conquering another cities public transport system.
The girls were pretty excited that we had a train with a cabin and we were rhe only ones in it. Consequently, they spread themselves out for the journey from Prague to Dresden. At Dresden we had to change trains for an intercity train. This train is like an upmarket version of our country trains.
All through the journey we are amazed by the different outlooks. The first part follows a river through the Czech Republic and onto Germany. At times there are massive rock faces and then castles built into the hills. The second half covers flat farming country as we head north to Leipzig.
The train station at Leipzig is amazing. It is actually a 3 floor shopping centre complete with food outlets, fashion stores and Aldi!
When we arrive we grab something to eat and then head to our hotel which is conveniently just across the road from the station.
Just a simple room here but plenty enough room and the girls have bunk beds which appeases them as they have had to share a bed in Prague.
After a bit of a rest we decide to walk up to the city. This is probably one of the smallest cities we have been to in Europe but still busy in places. It is Friday afternoon after all. We walk up past the Opera and University and they are quite contrasting buildings. The Opera reknown for is older architecture.
We find the hub of the city a pedestrian mall where there are buskers of all varieties.
We find St Nikolas church, where Bach was the music director. This is a beautiful church and the organist is playing so it really gives you a feeling of grandeur. We then head to St Thomas' church where Bach was also head of music. This church has 2 organs and Bach is buried beneath it so there is a memorial inside the church. It's a pretty amazing feeling to know that so much of Bach's work was originally performed in this church.
There is a statue of Bach out the front so we have a photo. We'll be back tomorrow to go through the Bach museum as we are too late today.
We walk back through the city and it's different areas and stumble upon a playground so Phil and the girls have a play. Check the photos.
Dinner is a nice piece of fish and veges from a fish shop called Norsee which must be a chain because it was in Austria as well.
Home ready for another adventure tomorrow.
