Not long down the road we stopped at Moose's Bakery at a place called Solitare, called so basically because there is nothing there! Moose was well known for his apple pie so as well as a slice of that we got some other goodies too - they were delicious!
After another short drive (short being anything under 6 hours now!) we stopped at our camp for a quick toilet break and necessary paperwork before continuing on to Dune 45, one of the only high accessible dunes in the Namib Desert. It was still early so we started the walk up the dune barefoot as this is easier to dig into the sand.
It was a long old walk up, and a few times I almost gave up. Who knew Dune walking was so tough! I was so proud of myself when i got to the top and took in the beautiful surroundings. After taking a few photos we decided to head down the dune. As we started to walk down, laughing at the others who had decided to roll or run, we noticed the sand getting hotter underfoot.
After a few more photos at the bottom of the dune we got back into the truck to drive to the carpark outside of Deadvlei - 5km away from Sossusvlei. We got into 4 x 4's at the car park and were driven along the sandy ground to start our walk into the deadpan. By now it was about midday and the sun was strong and hot, it was an arduous and tiring walk but the deadpan was well worth seeing. It is a salt flat area in the centre of desert, with dead trees that have been there thousands of years.
we slowly walked back to the 4 x 4s due to the heat and were taken back to the truck via a scenic tour of the dunes. Back at the truck Ruan had prepared lunch for us all. Back in the truck we were soon back at the campsite. Whilst sat in the truck i took a turn for the worse with the heat getting to me, and I thought I was going to faint! I was very pleased to get off the hot truck, have a drink and sit in the shade.
After pitching our tent, i got into my bikini and headed straight for the pool where i jumped right in to cool off. And cool off I did - The water was freezing - so cold it took my breath away, but perfect to bring my temperature right down! Neil and I then headed for the bar for a cool drink where we enjoyed chilling out with some of the others.
A few hours later we were back in the truck for the 10 minute drive to Sesreim Canyon. This was a small canyon with barely any water in but we had fun walking around and taking some photos with some of the others for an hour or so.
Back at camp we ate another delicious meal of bobotie before a well needed early night. It was a really cold night - its so weird how the desert is so hot in the day yet so so cold at night.
We were up early again, and after breakfast and packed lunch making we were on our way i the truck again!
Hope you are all still enjoying reading our blogs! xxx
