Our next destination was Twyfelfontein, part of Damaraland. Twyfelfontein translates from Afrikaans as doubtful spring due to early settlers being uncertain whether the natural spring nearby produced enough water to sustain farming.
The last hour of the journey was on unsealed Namibian roads resulting in a very bumpy ride especially for those of us sat near the back. Arriving at a sparse and basic campsite in the heat of the day we pitched our tents taking advantage of any shade we could find. We also made sure the bag and tent were zipped up tight to prevent becoming home to any curious scorpions wandering around.
Lunch was pasta salad with beans after which at 2pm most of the group readied themselves to jump back in the truck and visit a nearby lodge for a dip in a pool before taking in some prehistoric rock engravings created by indigenous bushmen. Not feeling 100% I stayed behind lazing around and catching up on sleep.
Enjoying a somewhat surprising warm shower, keeping an eye out for creepie crawlies as usual, we then gathered for a hotchpotch (but nonetheless tasty) dinner of chicken thighs, toastie and salad. The rest of the evening was spent warming up near the camp fire and braai (barbecue), the wind gusting across the desert dropping the temperature considerably after the sun had set. In this cold half-light the group was treated to some of Fabia's fantastic singing, a wonderful moment!
The earliest start for a while followed as breakfast was at 5.30. We were on the road pre-sunrise at 6, arriving at our destination of Swakopmund in time to book some adventure activities being the reason for our early start.
