Tomorrow we fly to Lukla and from the airport set out on foot for day 1 of Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. We spent most of the day shopping again for last minute "necessary" items. Here's my comprehensive itemised list which will go into the backpack:
3 trekking t-shirts
2 trekking pants
1 trekking shorts
1 set trekking poles
1 pair hiking boots
1 pair Chaco sandals
3 pairs socks
2 thermal tops and bottoms
1 fleece pants
1 fleece jacket
1 pair fleece booties
1 down vest
1 rain jacket
1 wool hat
1 neck warmer
1 balaclava
3 sports bras
7 pairs underwear
2 water bottles
1 mug
1 headlamp
1 sleeping bag (4+ season) and liner
Journal
Deck of cards
Kindle
iPhone
Toothbrush and paste
Wet wipes
Sunscreen and pawpaw ointment
You may note there is no shampoo or deodorant. Gross!!!! But really, I read a few places lower in elevation will offer a hot shower for about ten bucks but for the most part no one showers for the duration. Apparently the natural oil will be good for my hair.
Damo also has other essentials like first aid kit, maps, compass, water purification tablets, camera with tripod, and soap (just in case).
You may notice there is no tent, stove or food on my list. The beauty about this trek is there are many villages along the way with "tea houses". You pay a few hundred rupees (100 rupees = 1USD) and you get a bed and a meal. I have heard it's quite basic with no heating or electricity and, meals are prepared over a wood stove. Sounds pretty cold. Oh well, I'm here for the simplicity right?
I packed my bag including 2L of water and a filled mug. Not going to lie, it is a bit heavy. I guess I'll know more tomorrow just how heavy! Till then...
