Claire & Steve's Excellent Adventure
The key words for today were "CHALLENGE" and "PAIN"!!! Our climb upwards consisted of 3000 stone steps and boy did we feel every one of them. It made us realise just how completely unfit we both were especially as neither Bishwa or Ramsingh even broke into a light sweat whilst we were absolutely soaking wet after the first 5 minutes of climbing.
The scenery was beautiful; the mountains were lush and green and the landscaping to create fields for crops in the sides of the mountain were like huge steps from top to bottom.
We passed a lot of children running....yes, running.....up and down the mountain on their way to and from school. Bishwa pointed out the school which seemed like a tiny dot further down the valley. Some of these kids travelled for 2 hours to get to school each day and then had to climb back up the mountain to get home - no childhood obesity in these mountains I can tell you!
We finally reached Ghorepani (at 2855 metres). 'Ghora' means horse and 'pani' means water - named after the pack horses that once passed through the village. We stayed in a tea house with an amazing view of the mountains from our bedroom and even from the window of the shower room which was nice. We spent a really cosy night huddled around the wood burner in the main living room eating dinner and chatting to other people. We sampled the local brew known as Roxy which had an interesting taste but certainly did the job for some people!
