We left Halls Creek with about 300klms ahead of us to Fitzroy Crossing. My first surprise on these 2 towns was how small they actually are. I'm sure most people have heard of these places but they are really small. Generally 1 or 2 servo's, an IGA and in Halls Creek the bottle shop was only open for 3 hours during the day and in Fitzroy Crossing I haven't see anywhere you can buy booze and thats about it.
We started to see some road kill again, which is something we hadn't seen for several weeks and then I spotted this massive Wedge Tail Eagle sitting on a nice fresh road kill. I slowed to about 70kph and as we passed he just sat with his claws firmly on this nice fresh wallaby. There are no roos up here as their fur is too warm for this climate, so there are only wallabies.
We then came upon this vast area of termite mounds, all you could see for miles was these termite mounds.
We pulled into Fitzroy Crossing and the park here is sensational. Nice green grass, cold beer and lots of space.
We visited the old crossing of the Fitzroy River, I can see why this is now closed. In the wet season this crossing would generally be under about 6 metres of water and therfore useless. The Fitzroy River is about 700klms long and in the wet season can rise between 7 to 15 metres.
We did a cruise on the river travelling through Giekie Gorge. This gorge is absolutely stunning (check out the photos). We spotted around 10 fresh water crocs sunning themselves on the banks.
We leave here tomorrow to do the bottom end of the Gibb River road. to go to Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge. We have decided to leave the van here and tent it for a night, Lyette and Warrren are taking their van as it is classed as an offroad van, ours is semi offroad. We have heard the road is pretty rough. Have heard of vans breaking axles and 2 weeks ago a small bus rolled on this section of the Gibb.
We plan to arrive in Derby on Saturday.
