Borroloola 23/8/15
A heavy fog hung over the springs as we were leaving this morning. If anything, the moisture settled some of the dust on the road. We drove past Bauhinia Downs to the turnoff to Carpentaria Highway as we had decided to check out The Western Lost City in Carabinni Conservation Reserve. Just a short walk around and between the sandstone formations which looked similar to The Beehives but on a very small scale. We are camping at Borroloola for several days - The park is well maintained and the tourist season is noticeably winding back as indicated by vacant sites. The weather is becoming more humid as we approach spring ( 35 deg) and certainly dictates tourist traffic in the Top End. The town is close to McArthur River which flows out to King Ash Bay, offering endless fishing for those who own a tinnie!! The Bay is an anglers paradise and many fishing competitions are held over the season. Clubs from as far as Alice Springs and Darwin have permanent camp sites on land which is owned by King Ash Bay Fishing Club. We had the opportunity to spend an afternoon at the Bay with relatives of our friends Jenny and Lester. Great company!! Since we were so close to the coast, Bing Bong was worth a visit, we thought!! Glencorp have their loading terminal for lead and zinc mined at McArthur Mine ( nothing else) here and I guess we can say we have been to the furtherest point on The Gulf of Carpentaria.
