We were here for one reason and one reason alone, the elusive 'Duck Billed Platypus'. We sorted out hiring a car (another Getz) and planned our trip to Eungella National Park, prime Platypus spotting country. Setting off at 8.30am we were hot on the trail of the Platypus. We had heard that the best time to spot them was daybreak and twilight, as the sun had been up for over 3 hours we wondered what we were going to do till twilight. We decided to head for Hatton-Finch Gorge as it was on the way and it had some wonderfull trails, waterfalls and swimming holes. The 1st trail was supposed to take us 2 hours return but we were swimming in the crystal clear and freezing cold water by the waterfall within 30 mins. Either we had become incredabley fit or the times had been slightly over exaggerated, I'd say it was the later. We then headed to "The Wheel of Fire Falls" that was another 1 hours hike (yeah right) and at the top of 300 and odd steps. The waterfall was not as impressive as the name suggests but we did enjoy another swim. It was only 12.30, still another 5 hours till sundown but we headed for the National Park anyway. Stopping off at the 'Chalet' to take in the views of the valley and a well earned drink and ice-cream we arrived at Broken River at 2pm. We decide to go to the Platypus lookout early thinking that we might see one and if not we would head off and call back later. Luck must have been on our side as we had the lookout to ourselves and we only had to wait 5mins until we saw our 1st Platypus. Jo couldn't believe how small they were, they were only a foot long. We stayed watching for an hour - I think that there were 2-3 feeding, as they come to the surface to crew their food. Mission completed we left, leaving the Platypus to their lunch.
