Up early (for us, anyway) at 7:00am as we'd bought tickets to Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's great basilica. I think we were all totally and individually captured by the magic of this great cathedral. We had audio guides so the 5 of us tended to disperse and walk through the cathedral, and the museum and reflect on what we were seeing. The use of light, and the colours are amazing - what an extraordinary project to be part of, and we would love to come back again to see the progress at some stage in the future.
Kyra had heard of a flea market and headed there with Rory and Claire. Daddy headed off on a 10 block search for an ATM (successful!) while Rich sat in a park and waited. The flea market was exactly that - cheap and full of fleas but Rory managed to buy some headphones he had been hounding us for over many months - peace for a while! After a coffee/coke/ice cream stop, we headed to two of Gaudi's houses. We queued for 40 min at 1:00pm in the blazing sun to see Casa Mila La Pedrera. This was a house he designed with assorted sculptures on the roof. We enjoyed that, but it was the attic space and an apartment open to the public which really (again) demonstrated Gaudi's brilliance. It was worth the queuing! We lunched in a Barcelona café afterwards and then walked back to Le Meridien for siesta. A big night beckoned.
Tickets, the famous Tapas restaurant opened by the former chef and owner of El Bulli, was amazing. We arrived at 7:00pm and met Adolfo and Lady from Call Design Barcelona, and Ian, Trudy and Tom Box, friends from Sydney. We let the waiter choose the courses we enjoyed. The olives were a stand out, which were jelly-like and exploded in the mouth, and the marshmallow caterpillars presented on a small cactus and oysters with the silver pearl won the prize for presentation. After much wine with dinner, we adjourned to a gin bar to enjoy several Hendricks with cucumber (Daddy's new favourite drink) although Kyra limited her intake to white wine. We all arrived home to bed a little after midnight. Quite simply, the restaurant was outstanding and delivered one of the best culinary experiences any of us had seen. And it was surprisingly cheap.
