Craig + Merles Round The World Trip
Well hi folks!
I've now found a decent computer to upload all our photo's, hope you like them.
On day 1 we met up with Eva (an Irish girl) and Christine (a belgian girl) on the Sunday afternoon. After organising everything like petrol funds and food for the trip, we finally left. Our first trip took us to Litchfield national park. We stopped to see the termite mounds before heading to the campsite. As we were there quite late, we just set up the tent, made some tea and watched a film on Eva's DVD player.
Next morning we went to the Florence falls for a swim. It was really nice there. From there we headed off to the Buley falls plunge pools. That's the photo where I'm sat in the waterfall. Was very relaxing! After spending a while there, we left to go to Kakadu national park, where we spent 3 days.
The first night was spent at Kakadu Lodge in Jabiru. They had a bar, so I had a few beers there before tea. Made me sleep well!
On day 3 we left for Ubir to see the Aboriginal rock art. Some of the pictures have been there for as long as 50 000 years. Then we went to Nourlangie (or Anbangbang as the natives call it). The view from the top of the rock was amazing. Close to tea time we went to see Yellow Water, with the hope of seeing Crocs, but they were all hiding, and we were too stingy to pay the $50 to take the boat ride! That night we camped at the Mardugal campsite where we all got bitten my mosquitoes about 20 times each. We went to see an Aboriginal lady talk about the tucker they eat. Couldn't understand much of what she said though!
Next morning we got up early to see the Warradjan Aboriginal and Cultural centre. It was nice to read all the stories they have about why rainbows exist, and the weather etc.. I bought myself a boomerang here. I'm tempted to send it home now, but if it works properly, it'll just come back to me! After the cultural centre, we spent an hour or two relaxing at Gunlom falls. There were heaps of warnings saying Crocs inhabit the water there, but we went swimming and never saw any. A scar would have been a good memento. That night, when we got to Katherine, we decided to stay in a hostel (mainly because it actually had one) for a bit of comfort. Merle and I went for a pizza to break away from the norm of campfire meals. We sat up that night speaking to the locals at the hostel having a few beers. It was a really good laugh.
Day 5 was spent driving, with stops every 2 hours or so for bathroom breaks and to get munchies or petrol. We stopped at a really cool pub in Daly Waters. Travellers stop in by and write things on the walls or leave stuff like flip flops, underwear or t-shirts. It's a really quirky place. We made our way to the 3 Ways campsite in the middle of nowhere. The cafe had a bar, and was playing country music tunes. Felt a bit like deliverance!
Day 6 was another day of driving, with Mt Isa the final destination. We had to overtake 2 massive lorries towing huge diggers on a single lane road. Was a bit hairy!Mt Isa was just a huge mining town with not much to do, so it was another early night in the camp site.
on Day 7, we made our way up to the coast, to a place called Karumba. We stopped at one place where there was a group of off road race cars stopped. Turns out they were in a rally accross private land. They'd covered a fair distance too. Nothing much happened that night again.
On day 8 we went to the Undarra lava tubes and camp site. We couldn't see them by the time we got there, but got to see them the next day. That night we sat by the campfire having a few beers and talking. It was really nice to sit in the Aussie Outback by the campfire.
On our last day, we saw the Undarra Lava Tubes. They were formed after a volcanoe errupted and bore holes through the mountains. Some of the caves are over 100 km long! We only partially went into them though. This was very interesting. After that we just drove to Cairns. The weather was attrocious. It's meant to be the Tropical North too! As we got there 2 days early, our hostel did not have any beds for us til our booking, so we had to spend a night in the YHA, and a night in another backpackers lodge. The weather got better after a day, so we got to explore more of Cairns. It's a really nice place.
We're now looking for jobs and a more permanent place to stay. There are a few appartments I'm trying to arrange viewings of. Some of them have 2 bedrooms, so if we get one, anyone is welcome to come and visit us.
We were hoping to go to the Tropical Zoo today, but it's raining again, so we'll leave it for another day. Don't want to be drenched while seeing the Koala's!
