Hi! Sophie has handed the blog over to me, so here goes...
From Cairns we flew to Darwin, and it was back to the Outback for us! We explored the city when we arrived (which didn't take very long :-) and spent the first night at a concert that had been put on for the locals. We didn't really know what sort of concert it was going to be, but we thought we would go along anyway, only to discover that it was a concert for all of the trade unions in the area. We thought it best not to tell everyone our occupations (sometimes trade unions and human resources don't mix very well!!) But it was good fun listening to the music and watching the drunk Aborigines dancing.
The next day we set off for our two day trip around Kakadu National Park, which turned out to be one of the best trips we've been on. It didn't start off promisingly though, with two French women who didn't speak very good English, and two other girls. But the last pick up was a young Aussie guy who we nicknamed "Bruce" and the whole group got on really well.
Probably the highlight of the trip was a crocodile cruise, where the crocodiles actually jumped out of the water to catch the meat that was being dangled off the side of our boat - very very scary but amazing at the same time :-) We also hiked up to various points around the park, that featured in a very famous Australian film (one of my personal favourites!!) yes...Crocodile Dundee! Bet you're really jealous :-)
We spent the first night eating kangaroo and buffalo sausages from the BBQ, and then had a midnight swim in the local creek (well Sophie and I didn't have much choice as we were thrown in, in our clothes, by Bruce and our tour guide Brad!!) The second day was spent swimming in more creeks and under waterfalls, which was amazing!!
After the tour, the group decided to go out in Darwin, which turned out to be a very drunken night!!! Not a great idea, considering that we were flying to Perth the next day... Sophie's opinion regarding Aussies has changed though, as she met a very nice guy from the Australian army :-)
The last day in Darwin was eventful, however, when Sophie, who was resting her eyes and having a snooze on a bench in the middle of the city, was shouted at by a drunk Aborigine! "You can't sleep there!" he cried at her, before a nice Aussie man came to our rescue and saved the day!
