Day Sixty Seven - September 11, 2013
Kakadu to Darwin
I was convinced it was around 35 degrees as we packed up the tent this morning, but the car read a measly 25. The humidity was so high it felt massively hot! I have never yearned for England more! We set off for our last stop in Kakadu, South Alligator River, and watched the park flash by us. We arrived and walked to the viewing platform, where we could see the vast amount of life around the wetlands including the magpie geese which feed on the water chestnuts here, and are a favourite meal of the aborigines. 60% of the world's magpie geese come to Kakadu each year to feed - David Attenborough watch your back, I'm learning all the time. We saw a little wallaby feeding, but didn't see the elusive turtle Mum was so desperate to spy!
We saw the mud flats of the river, but no crocs for once on this trip!
The rest of the day was spent driving back to Darwin, checking in at the old campsite after failing to find room at another, putting up the tent and then shunting the Toyota back to the company and picking up our car from Duncan and Steph's. I managed to give mum a suitcase full of winter clothes which I can't imagine ever needing gain in this heat, and said our sad farewells until we see each other again - somewhere in the world! Who knows which county it might be. We had an amazing time travelling with Mum and Angus and were seriously spoilt rotten. We couldn't have done half the things we did in Kakadu as it would have crushed our budget - as well as the underside of our car on all the rough tracks! - and we couldn't be more grateful. It's so wonderful to share thins with the people you love, and build the memories which come from one off opportunities together. Thank you for all you did guys - love you so much and safe one ward travels.
Elly and I popped to the shops to stock up as we will leave Darwin tomorrow and start our trip south. Back at the campsite we put on a wash (our clothes are filthy, some beyond help I fear), had a dip in the pool and generally sorted ourselves and the car out for tomorrow. We had supper and headed to bed in the hot tent. I spoke to Duke, my much loved grandad, which always makes me miss home and want to be with him. Love you so much, Dukie! I know you probably don't believe it, but I compare most of the Australian coast to beautiful Bracklesham Bay and rarely find somewhere better. Next stop - Daly Waters!
