Today we left Rob who had a 7/8 hour journey back to Pegasus. We continued to our next destination, Otago Peninsula for 2 nights.
We travelled down the 92 to Gore and the OwKa Valley road to the waterfalls. This road was half broken up tarmac from the snow chains but still fine to,drive on, we had the valley road. Ritual to,ourselves, picturesque with lupin edged road.
The falls has a large car park with toilets whi h again was virtually empty. The weather was still cool Nd damp, with rain starting. An easy 10 min walk to the falls whi in hAve to say were disappointing. They were in the DK Book as the most photographed waterfalls yet we have seen on our tour on Arthur's and Haast Pass much more impressive falls.
Returning to the car, we continue the journey along the coast to our next stop Nugget Point. On reaching the Nuggets Road we were blown away by the colour of the sea. An amazing blue paradise island colour right along the coast line almost as far as the eye could sea. We just had to stop and take a walk on the beach, white sandy sweeping bays.
The whole caost line line along the road to the light house is the same, just beautiful. Large car park and easy walk along tarmac path we head to the light house. You can see fur seals and sea lions on the rocks far below.
Well worth a visit for the coast line and sea colour,
we reach Portobello Motel around 1830 after a stop at a super market and Macdonald, yes I know but we did t have time to cook or eat out as we had the Blue Penguin Tour!
The motel was great, a 2 bedroom cottage with large living area and kitchen.
We chilled for a while and then got our warm clothes on and headed for the Albatross Centre in the rain! After a brief talk about the Penguins we and lots of other people walked down to the gated viewing area.
In the rain rain wind and cold we experienced a special sighting of the tiny Penguins swimming onto the shore tomreturn to feed their chicks nested in burrows in the dunes. Although a lot of people, they didn't last the full 75 minutes unlike us who they had to,drag away.
They arrived in their 20's to the beach with lots of gulls pestering them as they made their way up,the dunes. A couple of nests were close to the viewing area where we could just watch their activity of the chicks appearing and they feeding off their parents.
Or they just rested outside their burrows. They were so close you could have touched them, a special experience for sure.
Def recommend the trip, book at the Albratross Centre or online.
