Hi all,
Today I got picked up at 8am to go to turtle island. It was expensive but I wanted to see it so decided to go for it. I travelled with this austrian couple and a guide to the river where we caught a boat out to sea. Turtle island is situated on the border between borneo and the philippines and because of this there is a lot of security checks. We went for lunch on a nearby island before heading to turtle island in the afternoon. Turtle island is beautiful!! I went snorkelling for a bit in the afternoon and saw loads of fishes and colourful coral. Then, when i was sitting on the beach all these baby turtles came out of the sand into the water! My camera decided to shut down so i didnt get a photo but it was still cool.
At 6pm we watched the sunset, went for tea and then waited and waited for one of the mummy turtles to come to shore to lay her eggs. We waited til 9.30 until one arrived. We all went down the beach in the pitch black and watched it laying eggs (106 eggs in all). The mummy was massive and so amazing. I'm so glad I went! I took some pictures but because we weren't allowed flash they are pretty poor.
A further 5 turtles layed eggs during the night. We then got to hold a baby each and let them go into the sea which was really special. I called mine 'champ' - it will need to be a champ as only 10% survive.
We then left the mum and the babies to get on with it and went to bed (double room all to myself - nice). Couldn't sleep though because of the big storm. I think I woke people up squealing because I thought a snake was chasing me around the room but it was just the belt from my trousers!! they didn't say anything the next morning though, what a beamer.
