"Jaipur, The City of Victory, is chaotic and congested, though it still has a habit of tickling travellers pink."
Nice pun Lonely Planet (maybe a tad cliched). But I just don't get why Jaipur is called the 'Pink City'. Will someone explain this to me? It's really more of an orange!
Colour aside, The city has a rich royal past and is full of hilltop forts and palaces.
David's favourite: Jantar Mantar, an observatory, which resembles a collection of bizarre and over-sized sculptures. We marched around the gardens, stopping at every instrument for David to explain to me it's astronomical relevance. Yeah... I don't remember any of it. But David was 'tickled orange'.
My favourite: Hawa Mahal an extraordinary fairy-tale 'pink' (orange) sandstone, delicately honeycombed hive, that rises a dizzying five stories. It was build to enable the ladies of the royal household to watch the life and processions of the city. Although I'm not convinced by this line. I think its all an elaborate cover story to hide the fact that the peep holes, allegedly used by the ladies, are in fact fairy doors.
There is one place that at least can correctly call itself by the right colour...
The Amber Fort
This formidable, honey-hued fort-palace rises from the rocky mountainside 11 km northeast of Jaipur. It's one of the main reasons tourist come to Jaipur, as we deduced from the unusual number of foreigners we found ourselves in the midst of. It really is magnificent, but I've got to admit: I was more thrilled by the fact that they'd built a Cafe Coffee Day into the stone walls, than I was by the historic architecture.
Give me a break... It is 47 degrees here, remember!
