Cameron Highlands is a large area in Malaysia full of tea plantations and forest areas. The weather very similar to that of the UK and was pretty warm when the sun was out. However, we were both used to much hotter temperatures found it a bit chilly - especially at night where we wrapped up in blankets.
On the first day we explored the little town area which ran along one road. There were a good number of Indian restaurants and Si managed to scoff his first banana leaf curry. The night scene was pretty much non existant and alcohol wasn't cheap or easily available so we managed to detox a bit.
The day after we decided to go on a 'hike' in search of Robinson Waterfalls. After a short walk into the jungle we found it. We scrambled down a steep mud 'path' to the bottom of the waterfall. (Si managed to fall on the way down and felt the bruise on his bum for a good week or so!!) - sadly it wasn't quite crystal clear water so neither of us fancied a swim. We carried on into the jungle clambering over logs and smaller waterfalls on our way. Although we heard a few random noises we didn't see any weird and wonderful creatures.
There were many tours on offer at Cameron Highlands - some were long treks which we didnt really have the footwear for. We wanted to see a tea plantation so did a half day tour. We visited a Rose Garden which was basically a tropical plant filled garden centre. There were some really pretty and unusual flowers but it wasn't really our thing. However, we were so incredibly lucky to not miss out on the collection of water bottles the owner had! It was so weird...there were shelves of empty water bottles!! Strange people!! We then went to a strawberry farm. We couldn't pick our own but had a few as a midday snack and they were definately marks and spencers quality - yum! We managed to resist buying a blowup strawberry as a souvenir. The next part was the tea plantation. There were endless tea plants over the hills as far as the eye could see. The BOH tea factory was tiny but we saw the machines sorting, drying and packing the leaves. Si wasn't too keen on the smell but enjoyed a free sample of fruit flavoured ice tea. The last stop was the butterfly farm where we got all the photos of the bugs! I'm holding the Rhinoceros beetle on the stick which is one of the worlds largest beetles. The guy then enetered the scorpion enclosure and started picking them up and placing them all up his arms before passing them out to people. I wanted a photo so asked if he'd quickly put it on my hand and then immediately take it off. Although he said yes, when I wanted it taken off he took his time - too long for my liking!! We saw the butterflies which were huge and their bodies were massive and fury. We also stopped at a temple where we took a few pics of more buddhas and golden statues.
The best bit about Cameron Highlands was probably the place we stayed. It was called Our Fathers Guesthouse. The family who run it were lovely, the food was great and we were able to laze on sofas and watch movies all night long.
