By our third stop out of Thailand, we had both adjusted well to the return of traffic, high rise buildings and the general hustle and bustle in the city. When we arrived we explored Chinatown swarming with red laterns, knock off DVDs and D&G bags. The Central Market closeby served as good shelter from the rain. It was here that Si had his fish massge. Tiny fish were nibbling at the dead skin and scabs on his feet, not really what I'd called relaxing! Si found it tickled and many people passing by were laughing.
The first night we decided to head to the Sky Tower. We couldn't find the underground station so just walked in the direction of the Sky Tower which was clearly visible. Thankfully the rain was wearing off! We couldn't see into the far distance and although we couldn't see the sunset, the Petronas Towers looked great all lit up at night. The free binoculars at the top were so strong we could see the poeple on the ground below. We also were given free tickets to the reptile zoo and the formula one simulator. The 'zoo' was full of snakes and very claustrophobic. I held a massive iguana which was pretty heavy, yet declined the opportunity to hold the poisonous snake! Sadly we didnt race against each other on the formula one simulator, just the computer. Si was finished and sat waiting for a good five minutes while I tried to get off the grass I consistantly drove on.
Waking up early on our second day, we headed to get some free tickets to the bridge between the two Petronas Towers. Our tickets were for 3pm so we decided to check out the shopping mall.
The place was huge and full of shops ranging from Jimmy Choo and Tiffanies to an overpriced Topshop. Definately no bargains to be had. There was one side of one floor full of young girls clothes with mirrors and sofas and plenty of sparkle - Yasmin would have loved it! After much window shopping, we headed outside to see the Motor GP World Tour exhibition with motorbikes that had been used by world champions. There was also a (very clean) park with waterfeatures etc by the towers which we relaxed in until 3. We were both reading and Si couldn't get comfy so he put his head on my lap. Minutes later a warden popped up from behind a bush on a hill and began blowing her whistle! Si was made to sit up! It was crazy, there were no rules and regulations listed anywhere.
Three oclock came and we headed up the towers. I had the urge to escape from the guide and make my way to the top as the bridge open to the public was only half way up. Si wasn't so comfortable being so high up knowing that nothing was below him. I don't think it helped when the guide informed us that the bridge moved! Sadly it was raining again so we had another hazy view of the city.
One of the days we took a trip to the Batu Caves. It was a Hindu temple set in caves with the worlds largest murugan statue. We had to climb the 272 steps to the top - (we'd had plenty of practice walking steps in Phi Phi and Cameron Highlands so it was pretty easy). Inside were various shrines and loads of monkeys. One cheeky monkey grabbed and drank the remaining drink in Simons can.
On the bus back to Chinatown we met Steve (a fellow Aston Grad). We had lunch and beers and he told us about Traders sky bar. Its one of the best bars in Malaysia and has views of the towers. The photos don't really show the bar in its full glory. On one side by the windows were sunken seats overlooking the park and the Petronas Towers. In the middle was a shallow swimming pool and the other side had sofas and stools. We each enjoyed an overpriced cocktails and enjoyed the views.
On our last full day we went shopping. I didn't expect Si to last as long as he did. We bought ourselves a cheap notebook so can upload photos easily and search out the cheapest hostels etc etc. We went to Times Square shopping mall where the largest indoor theme park is. The rollercoaster was crazy - loops, dips - the works! The mall itself was also huge - a cinema, a 48 lane bowling alley, a theme park - all of which you couldnt see when you entered. Endless shops - many of which didnt allow you to try on or return clothes - mental! Sadly didnt get round all the shops. The area was full of massive shopping malls - heaven!
Our nights in KL were spent in Reggae bar and Beatles bar (where the only reference to the Beatles was outside!). We also ventured round Chinatown and Si was consistantly mobbed by a DVD seller. After a few days we found a cheaper room so moved hostels - the place was fine but the owner was loopy. Married to a ladyboy and had a pet monkey who ran around with a nappy on!
