Kathy arrived on Wednesday evening and has quickly settled in. She landed at 6am and was on a bus to the peninsula 90 minutes later having passed through Immigration and Customs. I think that must be some sort of a record.
I cannot quite believe it but Thursday was basically our last day of fieldwork. In the last four years we have basically covered the whole front line of the Anzac Battle Site from Russells Top and the Nek down to Chatham's Post in the south (where we finished on Thursday). In addition we spent one day at the New Zealand Outposts to the north of Anzac Cove.
We have to provide a report to the Turkish Government about our activities during the permit period, which expires on Monday. And it has to be in Turkish. So Friday will be devoted to writing the report in English and it will be translated over the weekend.
We should be in fine fettle to write the report as we're hosting our Turkish and Kiwi colleagues to a dinner on Thursday evening. One or two of the team have a penchant for raki!
We will probably go up the mountain on Saturday afternoon to rephotograph some of the spots we surveyed in 2010 and 2011 when it was pouring with rain and we were still feeling our way as to how best to record the information, but given that the final report is basically written it's somewhat difficult to do any new stuff.
Next week we will spend a fair bit of time over at the Naval Museum in Canakkale where all the artefacts we've recovered are kept. We're planning on an exhibition showing the pick of the artefacts which tells the story of the battle in a somewhat different light to that which is often the case. So it's time to work on selecting the particular objects and working on how they can be presented in an interesting way. We will also spend a fair bit of time planning for next year and developing the book that will be published in the second half of 2015.
Kathy will probably team up with the partner of the exhibition's chief curator and do a bit of touring around the area while I still have my nose to the grindstone!

Julia Hi Simon, It all sounds very interesting and I am looking forward to hearing the new version of Gallipoli. Happy to hear that Kathy arrive safely and you are together again. AFL GF about to begin and Peter has decided he will support Fremantle for Kathy. Extremely windy here today. Ken gave us four new chooks this week. One has already been a fox's dinner. I guess it thought if it could evade us it could evade Mr Fox. One other escape has happily returns to capture and we still have one free. Maybe it will provide a tasty morsel tonight. Enjoy your trip. X J
