After a morning of meetings on Friday, the main one of which was with out Turkish colleagues, and having received our permits we started fieldwork in the afternoon. It was hot out there - 29 degrees when we returned to the bus at about 4pm - and we were working in an area that received no cooling sea breeze
We worked in the Lone Pine area not far from the Memorial. The road that goes up to the heights passes close by and they've cleared an area adjacent to this road. In so doing they've made it quite easy to access some of the most significant trenches on the battle site. These were the ones fought over during the August Offensive where some of the fiercest fighting durnig the campaign occurred.
I've uploaded some photos taken while we were working. One records the start of the season's work. The next one is of the indispensible GPS and its minder, Dr Jessie Birkett Rees. The final two are of one of our Turkish colleagues in one of the trenches. In hope they give an idea of their depth and condition. These were probably the easiest trenches to trace simply because all the vegetation has been removed. usually there is a real element of bush bashing and I imagine I'll be uploading other photos showing that in the next couple of weeks.
