We spent all of Monday and Tuesday fossicking around a couple of spurs that head south from the Lone Pine Plateau. One, Snipers Ridge, which then turns into the Knife Edge was the Turkish front line facing the Allies who were on Silt Spur, which we surveyed last year. The second was Weir Ridge, which is one back (east) from Snipers. We marked lots of trenches and other positions, and found quite a few relics. The number of bricks and stones that had obviously been used for a variety of reasons was more than we have come across elsewhere. Most of the bricks can be identified as having come from Maidos (the modern Eceabat), which is on the other side of the peninsula from the battle site.
Today (Wednesday) our Turkish colleagues had other commitments, so we were unable to do any fieldwork. Instead we spent the day working of the documentation for the project. The amount required is mind boggling. It is almost a full-time task making sure the various records are consistent. On top of that we're now at the stage where we need to make sure that we have good working definitions for what we have recorded, and the manner in which they're reported is consistent.
It was good to have a break from the field as the work is pretty arduous. What's more it sheeted down with rain this morning. If we had been out there it would have been miserable. Also I only have one pair of boots and that would have meant working in them tomorrow while they were wet, as there are no drying facilities here.
