We decided to visit Oxford - we've never been before and it takes less than an hour on the train from where we are...well, should do! Due to snow in the north, the train was delayed getting into Coventry for 40 minutes so we sat freezing on the platform but the ride there was nice. We headed for the tourist information place and bought a map with info for a walking tour of Oxford - Tara was thrilled!!
We visited many of the old buildings around Oxford (and missed a few as well!!). Most of the colleges are working colleges so you are only allowed to go so far or into certain parts. We did vist a few churches, climbed a tower dating from 1040 and of course we visited Christ Church - the most famous of them all!!
The cathedral was gorgeous - it's the only college in the world with a cathedral for a chapel - and we had to wait for the undergrads to finish lunch before we were allowed in the Great Hall where they filmed the Dining Hall for Harry Potter. It was set up for a Christmas function that evening and the table settings were gorgeous!
We also looked at some 13th, 14th and 15th century manuscripts which the Bodleian Library had on display for one day only. The detail was fantastic and it was worth having a look, just to see the Divinity School, where the Infirmary scenes for Harry Potter were filmed (and something else as well but I can't remember!!).
When we'd walked too much, we headed back to Coventry. We just missed the first train so had to wait an hour for the next one so we had plenty of waiting on platforms today!
