Went to Phillip Island with my friend April today, which was really, really nice! She's been before, but in Winter with her family when they came over, so she was looking forward to going again when it wasn't so cold!
We went to two main parts of the island - the koala colony, and the penguin parade. We did go to Seal Rocks but couldn't see any seals as they were too far away! Lots and lots of seagulls, but no seals :(
The koala colony is sooooo cute! There were quite a few cutie koalas hanging out in the trees when we were there, which was really nice. My first koala sighting - yay! One of the little fuzzies also walked right by us as it had obviously spotted some nice eucalyptus on another tree nearby. We thought he might actually have taken a dislike to us (they can be grumpy) but he just shuffled off one tree, walked along the handrail on the boardwalk, and then jumped onto another tree! The koala in the other tree didn't look too happy at first, but then just went back to sleep!
Then, in the evening, we went to the penguin parade! The Little Penguins, as they are so called because they only reach about 33cm in height, are really, really cute! Ingenious name, eh? They've just had some babies, so mama and papa penguins have been out feeding during the day. They can swim for up to 500km!!! They come ashore at night to avoid predators and they have to waddle along the ground for ages to reach they're little burrows, as they're babies are calling out to them to be fed!
The viewing platforms that we are on, are obviously fenced off, but they walk right by the fence taking absolutely no notice of us whatsoever - it was great!
So Phillip Island gets a big thumbs up from me!! Now I just have to get to somewhere to hold a koala.....
I'm off to New Zealand on Wednesday, so that should be great fun. Lots to do there - hopefully I can see what skydiving is like and I'm also entertaining the thought of zorbing....
