Didn't do much at all in Greymouth this morning, apart from upload photos and update my blog (as you may have seen!) Oh well, it had to be done I guess and I had also paid for wireless access which I could only use at Noah's Ark so I wanted to make sure that I used it up!!
Got to Fox Glacier without any hassle but met some people who had been on the Tranz Alpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch (and you can go the other way) and I really wish that I'd gone on that. Apparently the views are amazing and you get to have a walk around Arthur's Pass. Oh well, something else to add to my list of stuff to do if I ever come back here. I do hope that I come back to New Zealand and I think my list of things still left to do is longer than the list of stuff I've already done!
The only things I really, really, really want to do in New Zealand are swim with seals, swim with dolphins, go see the Moeraki Boulders, there's also an art gallery, and apparently you can do balloon flights over Christchurch, and paragliding! I'm going to Kaikoura for 2 nights as well, and there is a Maori tour that I'd like to do too. I've booked the rest of my bus journeys around the South Island and am now missing out going to Dunedin and Queenstown (spoke to a girl in Noah's Ark and she said that Queenstown isn't all that much and I think I'm so fed up of bus journey's that I don't think I'll kick myself if I miss out Queenstown. Also gives me more excuse to come back, not that I need any more excuses!!) I now have to book my accommodation, so I'd better get onto that pronto as I'll be in Christchurch over the weekend!
Fox Glacier is a really tiny township, which is so cute. It's got about 3 helicopter flights around the glacier places, a small shop (which sells absolutely everything!), a few cafe's, a couple of hotels, and one backpacker hostel. The latter of which I'm staying at and it's nice enough. Room is a little small, but the kitchen is nice and spacious and it's got a dining room which makes me think of a little cafe as they've got table cloths on the tables! The kitchen table is massive, made of some kind of tree, and it's actually a pretty gorgeous table. Don't ask me why I'm going on about a table, I just am! It's quite surprising the amount of nice things there are in hostels. The size of the televisions amazes me as I think some of them are bigger than my house!! Honestly, I think I've seen smaller screens in some cinemas (especially that one in Eaton Mall in Toronto - Sonia, you know what I mean).
It's such a cute little town, no chance of getting lost around here :D
I'm afraid I also have to be a little touristy / sad / whatever and buy some Fox's Glacier mints whilst I'm in Fox Glacier. Yes, I know, but it just has to be done!
Didn't get to do much in the evening at Fox Glacier, but after my ice walk tomorrow I think I'll take a walk to either Lake Minnihaha or Lake Matheson if it's not too far. There's also a little walk where you can go and see glowworms, so that would be cool. I could have gone to Waitomo Caves in the North Island but I really don't like caves at all and so I gave it a miss.
Looking forward to my ice walk tomorrow. I do wish a little bit that I'd done a Heli-hike, where you go up in a helicopter and can see the glaciers from above and get to land on the top. It is rather expensive though, so I decided against it for that reason. I also thought I'd rather have a hike on the actual glacier, rather than at the more snowy peak!
