Shona & Nikki's big trip!
We are now in Honduras! For those of you who don't know, Honduras is in Central America - between Nicaragua and Guatemala.
The flight was really quick, actually it took us almost as long to catch the bus to Miami Airport.
Anyway, arriving in San Pedro Sula, the second largest city here and the main transport hub of Honduras, was a TOTAL culture shock! After becoming accostomed to all the flashy cars and the fashion-consious people of Miami we had to adjust to the site of life here; old crusty vans with way too many passengers, hanging out of windows, even horse and carts are still used, and people in rags, with no shoes, everywhere. It was quite disturbing to see the poverty, and it felt like we'd gone back in time.
The streets of San Pedro are bustling and very noisy, and they are completely horn-happy in their cars/vans and big trucks! Beeping all day and night!
Upon arriving we realised straight away that Spanish is essential here, nobody speaks English and I can barely string a few words together of Spanish. Uh-oh!
We spent last night in a hotel which resembles a prison, I am not joking- it was pretty depressing! Long and narrow grey corridors, grey rooms with one window looking onto the lovely corridor and one to an alley place where they are constantly (and very loudly) loading/unloading Coca-cola vans, whilst making vile choking sounds and gobbing flem everywhere - charming!
We went for a little wander last night and found a cafe to eat in, there is a nice plaza nearby where everyone was hanging out and there was live music, didnt stay too long though as everyone was really staring. There was no other women out alone (without men) and no other foreigners.
Managed to have a very broken nights sleep but kept hearing quite disturbing things throughout the night, also it is baking hot here, inbearably sizzling!
We decided to move on as soon as possible, like today! So we are going to catch a bus to Copan Ruins. But first of all we decided we had way too much stuff in our rucksacks and felt pretty guilty considering the people here have nothing. So we did our good deed for the day and put together a big bag of stuff; t.shirts, vests, a skirt, a cardigan, a pair of plimsoles and other bits and bobs and went out and gave it to an old barefoot homeless woman on the street, she looked soooo happy! Felt really good about that. So if any of you ever happen to go to San Pedro and see a very trendy old lady on the streets you know why!
