Shona & Nikki's big trip!
Hey! Just watched the very stressfull Arsenal match, ugh. Horrible. Wish I hadnt watched it, ended up just drinking too much (so forgive my spelling!) in the local Irish pub and then having to watch the Barca fans celebrate, great.
Anyway, we've have had a cool last few days. We've been staying in our new hostel, soooo much better than the last - thankgod! You can actually walk barefoot in the room, there's an outside communal kitchen (clean enough) and a swimming pool. We've been pretty comfortable here.
We moved in on Friday, we were sharing with four men which was a bit weird and pretty damn scary at first. But it was ok once we got to know them. There was an English guy who's been traveling for 2 years - amazing! An Argentinian, a Korean, and an American who actualy lives there in the room. He really seemed scary at first, he's from Texas which is scary enough, but we like him now.
So the first night, Friday, we didnt want to spend too much time there, being the scaredy cats that we are, so that was our excuse to try out the nightlife, it was ok. Its just how it is in the films - guys just cruising their big cars/bikes up and down Ocean Drive, posing, pumping their music and basically looking like plonkers. Had some lovely cocktails though.
Saturday we had a very surreal day recovering on the beach next to a very strange sight; an old guy, in a wheelchair with a huge stars & stripes flag attatched, dressed as Santa! Sitting there drinking with a bunch of odd-bods (2 dwarfs, some alchy's, and a few crazies), all listening to xmas songs on South Beach, in the middle of May! haha! (check out the photo's soon).
Later on we met some Californian surf-dude guy on the street, wearing no shoes, he's staying in our hostel - think he may have followed us actually, anyway he was funny so we partied with him that night. Went to a roof-top bar where the view was great and all the seats were waterbeds, very swish.
Sunday night we went to dinner with our Texan roomy (who turns out to be really not scary at all), he showed us a little Cuban cafe nearby where the locals go, its cool there - v.Cuban and v.cheap!
Three ozzie girls moved into our dorm, they're really nice, they just started their travels too. Think the Texan guy thought he'd died and gone to heaven - just him sharing with five girls! He never gets to use the bathroom though. Oh well.
We actually managed to do a bit of sight-seeing on Monday, went to the Holocaust Memorial centre, which is really powerful. Especially the central sculpture which is a huge hand (with the number tatoo on the wrist) and lots of tormented figures climbing around the wrist, trying to help each other, it was really moving. Unfortunately both our camera batteries died at the same time, typical.
In the eveing we went back to our local Cuban (the Playa Cafe) with our roomy again. It was good 'cos it was happy hour so it was extra cheap and pretty busy. They played lots of cool Cuban/Latin music and some of the regulars played instruments (well, they drummed on wooden boxes and stuff). We ate really well, had rice, bean curry thing, a huuuge chicken sandwich and a few Corona's all for about ten pounds between us.
Later on there was a huge storm in the night, quite scary - lightening, thunder, the works!
Has been pretty much raining ever since, has given us a chance to sort a few things out though - yesterday we booked a ticket out of here. To Honduras! Leave tommorrow morning!
Actually we was a bit naughty yesterday, after we payed for our tickets, we went shopping and both bought v.cute trainers (mine are not very practical either - bright white!). Then we treated ourselves to a lovely expensive meal (uh-oh! so not sticking to the budget!), had the best chicken and shrimp curry though - but oh my god! The portions were disgusting! I ate so much my belly hurt and we both still had enough for about 3 big meals each! I totally understand why Americans do the doggy bag thing now! So we did it too - and that was our lunch and dinner sorted for today!
Right now it is so wet here, just rain, rain, rain! And its not like English rain- when it pours it really pours! Its so wet a frog actually jumped through our dorm window this morning! It was so funny, all of us were running round screaming our heads off, we all agreed that frogs are cute - but NOT in your bedroom! No way Jose!
Anyway, I better go and pack now. I'll upload my pic's soon and write soon - from another corner of the world! Adios amigos!
