Shona & Nikki's big trip!
Hey everyone, sorry I havent written for a while - been way too busy having fun and partying like a mad woman to sit down and write. Past 11 days or so kind of blur into 1 so this entry may be a bit hazy.
So, we are now on the lovely island of Roatan, Honduras. Which is the largest of the 3 Bay Islands, in the Carribbean sea. We are staying at Half-Moon beach in the West End which is a nice little sea-side town that is basically just one long sandy road of restaurants, bars, shops and diving schools along-side the beach.
The journey here was pretty hectic, first of all I set my alarm to PM intstead of AM (doh!) which meant we woke 15mins before our coach was due to leave, somehow we managed to pack, get dressed and run (well more like waddle with our over-sized rucksacks) to the coach just in time - phew!
We then had a 7hr bus journey in the sticky heat of the rainy season that it is, with no air-conditioning and a very confusing change-over half-way through. Luckily we met a guy, Miguel, who lives here on the way who explained when and where to get the ferry as we were so clueless. We all shared a taxi and made it in the nick of time. We then had an awful 2hr rocky ferry ride to the island. It was really wavy and rocky and quite scary. Poor Nikki was throwing up for the whole journey and so was Miguel, and I was stuck between them playing nurse Shona - yuck!
Thankfully we managed to hitch a ride with his friend all the way right to our hotel, but unfortunately they had no rooms so we then had to waddle (with our sea legs, sickness and big bags) to find somewhere else - ended up staying at yet another awful, disgusting hostel.
Our room was tiny, dirty, and very, very hot (which may have had something to do with the tin roof I guess). It was really grotty and there was junk and lizards everywhere, and I'm sure I saw a huge crab on the floor too!
We moved the next day to Chilles hostel down the road which is really nice. Two steps from the beach (and a bar), private room with shared kitchen and bathroom - and a fan - yay!
Anyway, as soon as we made it to the beach it made it all worth while. Hurt-your-eyes bright white sand and the clearest water I've ever seen! Beautiful!
There is, however, one small, but very irritating drawback though - sandflies that bite -alot! Little b******s.
Well, since that first weekend its been a bit of a party-fest for us. We went a bit mad for about a week and was out everynight. Mostly we start our nights in a bar called Twisted Toucan and get a bit twisted ourselves. We met and befriended some local guys who take us out to clubs after all the bars closed and we dance the night away with the islanders. Its been fun.
We met a nice Costa-rican guy who lives here who let us stay a couple of nights in this lovely huge house by the sea which was great. Was so nice to stay in a proper house, with hot water and everything!
With all the partying we didn't do much in the day for a few days, just slept all day! And certainly havent gotten around to doing any scuba diving as we had planned, tut tut! Have however had a couple of midnight swims in the sea, which is such a weird feeling - floating in the sea gazing at the stars, or drunkenly jumping off the pier in all my clothes! ha ha!
We've also met a guy with a boat, which is fun, and also very useful! Getting a lift literally to my doorstep on a boat is definately a new experience for me! He also lent us some snorkel gear the other day, so I did actually do something in the day time and saw some fishys. Saw a reeeeally huge miserable looking one, don't know what it was.
Yesterday we caught a lift with him to go and see some dolphins training! Awww! They are soooo cute! They live in the sea but come to the resort and are trained and fed. They did some jumps and tricks for us.
Anyway, I must go as am getting bitten alive by sandflies (yep the internet cafe is on the beach! I am actually sitting on the beach whilst online - hee hee!)
But we have decided we've probably worn this town out a bit now so at the weekend we will start our journey to Belize, then up to Mexico and Cuba!
