Shona & Nikki's big trip!
Hey! We are still having a great time in the village of Copan Ruinas!
Yesterday we went to see the Mayan ruins nearby, which really are amazing! There is a whole city there! There is also an impressive 63 step staircase which holds the longest inscription of Mayan hieroglyphics. We spent the morning exploring the ruins, and also wandered through a little nature trail close by, saw a weird furry animal - have no idea what it was!
Today we went horse-back riding- it was so much fun! It was just me and Nikki, our guide (who speaks no English!) and two young boys. We were both really scared at first, neither of us being able to ride horses, there being no helmets and the guy not speaking English but by the end of the 3 hour ride we were like - 'yay! faster, faster!' Bums hurt a bit now though!
It was really interesting too, we got to see a bit of how the people here really live, not in beautiful little villages like this one but in little shanty towns or lone huts in the middle of nowhere.
We rode through the mountains, admired the great views, and passed through chilli and coffee fields. We were meant to go and see an Indian village but it started to rain so we galloped (well kind of!) back - fun! I want a horse! Suggested to Nikki that we should try and get one and do the rest of Central America on horse-back! Unfortunately we don't think its very feasible... damn...
Anyway, we've finally had enough of not being able to speak the language (although I did actually manage a half-understood conversation with our very patient guide!) but we also had a confusing incident this morning when Nikki tried to ask for the key for room number two in our hotel and we got two cups of tea instead!
So tommorrow we are both starting Spanish lessons at a school nearby, very cheap private tuition for four hours a day for the next three days, should help us out a bit - I hope!
