Shaun on the Road
Well, at least I know that at least one person checks this site on a regular basis :). Sorry for the delay. Let's see, where was I. I only spent a total of 2 days over in Western Australia. It was good over there and I would have loved to spend longer, but there were things that I wanted to do on the East Coast of Australia and I realized that I just did not have time to spend in WA. I did get to see the Pinicles Desert, however, which is full of cool rock formations. We also did some dune driving out there, but it certainly did not compare to the no seat belt, 70 mile per hour, death defying rush of the dune driving I did while in Peru. I guess when you have people on the bus in their 60's you have to tame things down a little. The tour operators here have to consider litigation and so forth. Oh to be in a 3rd world country again!
Anyway, I came over to Brisbane and spent a day in the city itself. A cool enought city, but when you are in Australia the attractions are out in the country, so that is where I headed. I went first to a place called Hervey Bay, which is near Fraser Island. I met up with a group at my hostel and the 10 of us got a jeep, camping gear, and food and went out to the island. It was lots of fun. The lakes there are awesome with amazing beaches and crystal clear water. The roads are also a blast. You are either on sandy tracks in the forest or driving on the beach. Both of which are an experince to drive on, especially in a stick shift diesel 4 x 4 driving on the right side of the vehicle. It came to me pretty quickly, though. Another highlight of the island was a place called Indian Head, where you could look down into the perfectly clear water 200 feet below you and see turtles, dolphins, rays, sharks, and whales in the distance. The group also made this trip fun. We just kicked back every evening and sat around the camp fire. That is something I have not done in a while.
From Fraser I went up to Airley Beach, which is where I am now. Today I went diving and tomorrow (Thursday) I leave for a three day two night boat trip. Should be good. From here I head north to Carines, and then I fly to Ayer's Rock. On the 26th I make my last domestic flight to Sydney, where I stay until the 31st, when I fly home. Looking forward to the rest of the trip, but home is definatly on my mind at this point. I miss you all and am looking forward to seeing every one of you. Take care and I will write again at least once before I head home.
