Shaun on the Road
I imagine that this will be my last postcard from on the road, but I will probably have one more from home when I get there. Where was I?
I went diving in Airley Beach and enjoyed it a lot, as usual. I saw at least three turtles per dive, which was great. We also swam through some narrow passages underwater, which was an experience. It was all I could do not to bump into the canyon walls. The strong current didn't help matters either.
The next day I went on my three day sailing trip, which was totally worth it. We did a lot of snorkeling around the great barrier reef, as well as sitting on some great beaches and just hanging out on the boat. Again, I had a great group of people and we all got along really well. Some very funny moments on board the boat as well.
From Airley I went up to Cairnes, which was so, so. I was only there for a day and quite tired from my overnight bus trip, so I didn't enjoy it all that much. Just a big tourist city.
Flew from there to Ayer's Rock, which was totally worth the trip. For those of you who don't know, Ayer's Rock , or Uluru, is the world's largest rock. It is massive. I rented a bike and road out there from my hostel, which was about 20 km each way. The next day I went out to the Olga's, which are also huge rocks, but they are not quite as big. These are 55km from the resort. I started biking at 5:30 am to see the sunrise. I am glad I went that early. I was totally alone in the middle of the Australia desert just listening to a symphony of birds as the sun came of the horizon. It was awesome. Went for a hike around the rocks themselves before draging my sorry butt back to the hostel. I was glad to be back.
Today I flew into Sydney and will be here until the 31st. Again, I arrive in Calgary on the 31st before heading to Saskatchewan for a couple of weeks. Then it is back to a normal life. I have no idea how I am going to cope, but we shall see.
