Shaun on the Road
Hey all, I just wanted to add a little info about where I will be for New Years. Right now I am in the small city of Huaraz, which is about 8 hours north of Lima. Tomorrow at 7 am I am leaving for a trek that will last until the 3rd in the evening. Should be great. So I will be spending New Years somewhere high in the Andes. Sorry Frank and crew, I will not be able to make it out to the outrageously fun party that I am sure you will be having.
While I am writing, I'll tell you a little about what I've been doing since my last update. I was in Lima for a little over a week volunteering at the South American Explorers Clubhouse in Lima and taking more spanish lessons. I spent Christmas Day at the houses of two different families. It was great and I thank them both very much for making me feel at home and giving me company on Christmas day. On the 26th I got a bus to the town of Nazca, where there are huge stone pictures in the desert that you can only see from the air. Quite impressive, but I was getting a little airsick in the 4 person plane we were in. Thankfully we landed before anything got out of hand.
That same day I caught a taxi collectivo from Nazca to Ica, about 2 hours away. The collectivo was a 1975 Chevy with 4-60 AC and 8 people. Not quite fun, but better and faster than some buses I've been on. In Ica I went on a dune buggie ride in this jeep that was built like a tank. VERY fun. Also had my first taste of sandboarding, which is cool too. Just so you know, you get sand EVERYWHERE, so the shower and the change of clothes back at the hostel was very welcome.
I'll give you all another update in a couple of weeks. I am meeting a friend of mine in Santiago de Chile on the 7th of January. I am really looking forward to seeing a familiar face. Look for an update around that date.
Take care all and have a very happy and safe New Year.
