So we had our first experience of the famous 'sleeper' buses going from HCMC to Nha Trang...they are cosy to say the least!!! Not really designed for people of our size!! It is basically 3 rows of 'bunk beds' on a bus, you can see from the pictures what they are like...but yeah a journey on them is interesting!!! So after an unknown change of bus in Mui Ne, we got to the little Russian seaside town of Nha Trang, oh sorry we meant Vietnamese town....This town seems have turned into the key Russian holiday destination, with all signs, menus etc in Russian....a little unexpected! We think that maybe Nha Trang has had its day as a great destination for backpackers...it has an ok beach and a few other things to do around the place but we saw 5 huge developments well underway next to the beach which is only going to make it worse....Overall we had a couple of relaxed days here, just wandering around the place, and visiting a great photo gallery!
From there it was the overnight sleeper bus to Hoi An, where our experience of sleeper buses got worse!!! These had so little room in them, as well as one being next to a broken aircon so it was freezing; the real icing to the whole experience was that we broke down for 90mins at 11pm!!!Obviously no one told us what was going on but they seemed to change about 3 tyres on the bus!!....eventually we pulled into Hoi An, which luckily is worth the effort!!! It is a really lovely town, with an old quarter near the river which is so nice to walk around in. At night it's all lit up with lanterns. It also has an amazing beach, with nice refreshing sea, which was much needed after the cycle there! You can also get beer for 10c a glass, so Shane was always going to be a fan!!
The other thing Hoi An is known for is tailors...there are hundreds of them everywhere...we figured at this stage we could just about start getting some new things...so our backpacks are now stuffed to the gills with no space to breathe!!! Shane also got a few home truths from the tailor, who was telling him what would and wouldn't suit him, concluding that he has no bum but she could still make him look good in a suit!!!
The only other surprise in Hoi An was that our favourite restaurant, and probably some of the best food we have had here in Vietnam, was vegetarian!!!! Don't worry lads we will still be cooking and eating meat upon our return!!...but yeah it was so tasty and great value....
Our final activity in Hoi An was a cooking course. We started this one with a trip around the market, trying a few different specialities....the not so good one being a tough piece of tongue that made Shane gag!!! Luckily all the others were nice and it was interesting to try them, without Van, the chef, we would have never know what they are or to try them!! So after picking up a lot of raw ingredients we headed to Vans house where we would all be cooking our chosen dish...There was 9 of us on the course and everyone cooked a different dish which we each got to eat a portion....it was another great course, which will no doubt influence Shanes cooking once we get home!! He did make the favourite dish of pork belly in coconut milk....every bit as good as it sounds!! We ended up rolling out of there but still had enough room to squeeze a 10c beer round it and watch the super 15 final!
Overall we really enjoyed Hoi An, and would definately recommend it!! Up next is Hue, about 4 hours north.
