So we had a nice painless border crossing into Thailand and headed to Chiang Mai. We didn't do a whole lot while we were here, just visited the night markets and hired a motorbike to drive up to some waterfalls, the big lake and a temple at the top of a hill, which offers great views over the town. We then booked our overnight train down to Bangkok that would get us into the city at 8.30am….this should have been a fairly simple journey, but as our last long overland journey it decided to end with a bang!! We got on our fan only train which looked like it had had better days….we were impressed with how the chairs turned into beds but that was about it!!! After travelling along for about 6 hours the train broke down at 2am….so we sat on the tracks for 2 hours before being herded off the train and onto air-con buses at 4am…where we spent the next 10 hours…not quite the journey we had expected!!
We had a couple of days in Bangkok doing a provisional check of the shopping to make sure that we were in a position of power for our pre going home bargaining and buying!!
From Bangkok we headed to Hong Kong for a hectic few days!!
