First up was the madness of Mong Kok, where our accommodation was…it is pure craziness, with people everywhere….luckily it's a great location, with shopping, transport and good food right on our doorstep...now we have had a few small rooms in our travels but this one really takes the biscuit….it was about 6 foot by 7 foot, so we just about had enough room to sleep in…luckily there was space under the bed to keep our bags!!! During our first night walk we managed to find really tasty food and discover a pedestrian street that has night performers on it…..including a crazy dancing granddad!!
We had a great time doing all the usual tourist attractions, going on the Star ferry across the harbour, taking the tram up to the Peak to admire the view, checked out the very posh Peninsular, with its 4 string quartet playing in the lobby. We also ventured into Chung King mansions, which is renowned for its Indian Restaurants…and is somewhere that Phil was always scared to go into as a school girl here!!! It's a total maze inside, with a lot of people vying for your attention, but the food that we ate made it worth the adventure!!
Continuing the food theme, we had watched Anthony Bourdains 'No Reservations' in Hong Kong and decided to check out one of his recommendations in Tai Po…..and it was worth the effort…it was very simple, but the goose was amazing and the pork was so tasty….we felt like we were in one of his episodes, as there was no English menu and only the manager spoke it!!
The final highlight from part 1 of our HK tour was definitely going to the Happy Valley races! The setting is spectacular, with the course in the middle of a concrete jungle….we paid our euro to enter the general public zone and proceeded to study the form guide and decide on which horses may help double our holiday budget!!! Unfortunately the luck was not with the Irish on this night and horse after horse let us down….we were sure that Pearl Star would come in for us, despite being a total outsider, but somehow we were wrong! So even though we came away without winning much we had a great night and would recommend it to anyone in HK on a Wednesday night!
