After that Bob and Heather had kindly (or more likely crazily!!) offered to let us borrow their 4x4 Ute to head to Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. We had a great few days driving on the sand and seeing all the sights on the island. On the first day we headed up to the top, checking out Champaign Pools, Indian Head and Waddy Point- which def involved some of the craziest driving we did. We were being thrown about as we went over all the bumps! Luckily for us we had seen where other people got bogged down and how other people were getting past areas so we just copied them...this mainly involved gunning it and hoping for the best!!! From there we headed down to check out Lake Allom, which clearly was showing the effects of the storms as you couldn't walk the walkway as it was all underwater. We managed to climb over trees onto one of the platforms for a look. The best thing we saw was a few turtles coming up to see what we were up to! After that we checked out the Maheno Wreck, a passenger liner blown ashore in 1935 by a cyclone.
From there we went back to the beach where we picked our camping spot for the night. Dingo's are the big danger on Fraser, but we never saw any the whole time we were there. You do have to be careful though and put everything away into the main cabin. We had a very peaceful night there, with the moon so bright that we could see everything clearly, it was a bit mad!
The next day we got down to Eli Creek, a fast moving crystal clear creek that carries you down about 2km. We had a body board so this was great fun....all 5 times we did it!!! The water might have been fresh but it was well worth it!! From there we went to the Lake Wabby lookout, and then onto Lake McKenzie, which again wasn't how it used to be due to the rain. We were told that it has risen over 3 meters, so the beach here is now tiny! It was still perfect for a swim though....From there we went to Central Station where we were spending our second night. The next morning we decided we would head south and see the last 3 lakes before getting the ferry back over to the mainland....so we set off and got to Lake Birrabeen without any drama....again the walkway was underwater...so we didn't really get to see too much of it....we then continued down the road towards the next lake when we came across a puddle on the road...so Shane went for a walk through it to see how deep it went, on the best path it was probably just above the calf, so we decided to go for it....about 5 minutes later we came across a slightly bigger puddle...again Shane went walking...this time it came well above his knee and was wetting his shorts! So we decided not to risk getting stuck in the middle of it so we turned around and took an overland route down to the beach. It really is mad how much the weather has changed the island at the moment, but it really was a highlight of our time in Australia.

Alexandra W Wow that is crazy how much the rain has impacted it. Especially when only a few months ago we were hearing on the news about all the fires. But as you said in one of the previous blogs, you forget how large Oz is! xx
