(S) On the was to Mandy and Andy's house, we stopped in Rushden to see where my Nana and Gramps grew up and where my mum lived for the first three years of her life. We started at the church where Nana and Gramps got married and then went on to see the house Nana grew up in and later started a family with Gramps in. After that it was off to Alfred St. Jr school where Nana and her brothers and sisters went as children.
On October 3rd 1940, part of the school was bombed, seven students and two teachers lost their lives that day. Great Uncle Charlie was buried alive on that day but thankfully they rescued him. They have since made a memorial garden and erected a plaque to commemorate that fateful day.
I went inside the school to the main office to ask if it was ok to take a few pictures and the head teacher, Mr John Kidney, thought it was so great that Tim and I were coming to have a look that he took us on a tour of the school himself. We saw inside classrooms, the memorial, pictures of the school after it had been bombed, it was great. We took lots of pictures!
It was then off to see Mandy & Andy in Lower Dean where we were staying tonight. After a refreshing cuppa it was off on a 4 mile stroll around the village and surrounding farms, such a nice area and we were able to get up close some of the animals for a pat.
After a delicious sausage stew we settled in to catch up with a few drinks, many laughs and plenty of photo's. What a great night!
