The Okavango Delta!! Where do I start...
Ok so we set off bright and early for the delta, tent was packed, small rucksack packed and camera packed!! Not sure I quite knew what was in store but it couldn't be that bad...
The briefing scared me enough never mind the mokoro we was travelling in (a canoe)!! We was pre-warned about the hippos-I was fine with that but spiders?! Erm no thank you!!
We set off through the delta...through reeds pelting you from every angle, bugs falling all over you an worst of all spiders!! In the first five minutes I counted about six of the b*****s!!! So I was freaking out!! Our poler (the lady who was looking after our mokoro) kept telling me to relax lol RELAX?! I felt like I was on the film set for a bugs life!! That was it my hoody went on back to front so my head was covered and I couldn't see, I decided that was the best way!! I did remove the hood once to have a look at the elephants but felt like I was crawling!!!
We arrived at the island which was just well, an island with trees, hippos, crocs and elephants oh and the occasional big cat-nothing to worry about!! My main concern was the toilet facilities! They were none existent! Had to pee in the bush for two nights, not exactly the ritz!!
The first evening we went on a bush walk to see the animals at sunset then headed back to camp for spaghetti and meatballs nom nom! It was also vics birthday so we had cake and toasted marshmellows on the campfire!! After my sugar top up we headed to bed...
The night was interesting, hippos grunting and a herd of elephants grazing just behind our tents :-/ noisy little so and so's!!! We woke up at 6am and headed on an early morning bush walk. We saw the herd of elephants and their babies and also zebra before four of us decided to head back to camp with carl our guide...should have carried on with the rest of them!! We had to cross the river back to camp...only problem was the big bull elephant and his two friends were stood in our way chomping at trees!! We had to be quiet and take a slightly wider route but they heard us and came charging out of the trees towards us...they hadn't seen us, just heard us so we had to sit in the grass whilst it was staring right at us flapping its ears and deciding whether or not to charge! Fortunately they turned and all three headed off in the other direction...phew...!!
Made it back to camp, had breakfast and had a little nap in the tent...this is where I proper freaked out, nevermind the elephant there was a fricking gecko in our tent!!!! A few deep breathes and I managed to deal with the situation but couldn't wait to tell Vicky! Only thing was the little buggar already knew it was there!! Apparently it was there throughout the night but she didn't dare tell me as she knew I would freak!!
We lost 'bert' the gecko which panicked me even more and when the little buggar ran out at me I screamed the campsite down, legged it out the tent with my sleeping bag in tow and asked for help...erica and Vicky kindly removed 'bert' from our tent and all was calm :-) give me an elephant anyday!!!
We spent the rest of the day chilling and then headed out into the delta on our mokoros in search of hippos before heading back for an evening meal and fun around the campfire :-) never knew I said 'marshmellow' in such a funny way until the locals started taking the piss lol hmmm!!!
The journey back to the mainland was just as horrific-spiders, bugs and reeds in my face!! Was relieved when I could finally get off the delta and onto dry land!! Overall opinion...amazing place and experience but would rather jump off vic falls again if I had a choice of the two!!! Oh but the lilies on the delta were so cool and everywhere!! Very pretty :-) lol
Next stop Namibia!!
