We went on a 3 day road trip back to Cairns, had to get up at 4 in the morning to put away our tent in the pitch black. Nothing prepares you for the size of Australia, we never realised how big and remote it is. We passed our last set of traffic lights in Alice Springs for 2200km before we got to Cairns. We got the best view on the coach as we were in the front seats even though there is "nothing" to see. We travelled 800km on our first day and didn't see anyone allday. We saw the second largest termite mound in Australia, over 5metres tall and we even took a "nothing walk". As far as the eye could see there was nothing, not even a sound. It was so weird but amazing at the same time. We'll probably never experience anything like it again. The sunset was one of the best we have seen as there was nothing on the the horizon to block our view. We were driving through the middle of the desert at night, all we could see was a layer of dust in front of the coach. No kangaroo stood a chance if they got in our way. At one point we stopped in the middle of the road switched off all the lights on the coach and spent some time staring at the stars. We weren't worried about being hit standing in the middle of the highway because there was no traffic to hit us. We spent the night at a cattle station 150,000 acres (Belgium is only 50,000 apparantely) so it was pretty huge. You need ten acres of land for every cow in the outback whilst you only need one acre for ten cows in the tropics. Got to give the pet kangaroo beer - we think it was an alcoholic. It was so cute and fluffy.
Day 2..
Passed through Boulia, and headed towards Middleton where the population is 2, 6 including the pets. Stopped off for a bbq lunch, the flies were everywhere. Went for a bush walk to see some Aboriginal art passing by two huge olive pythons on the way!! Finally reached some sort of civilisation when we reached Winton, the home of Qantas and 'Waltzing Matilda' - we now know the story behind the song and all the Ozi jargon thats in it. Fed some camels on the way to Hughenden, they took quite a fancy to David's straw hat. Passed by the time on the coach by watching dvds, lots of true stories about Australian history which were interesting and we even played ten pin bowling down the aisle of the coach!! We had to walk all the way down to the back of the coach before we could roll the ball, David was robbed in the final as the other 2 finalists were lucky enough to have their turn whilst we were going over huge bumps in the road.
Day 3
Got up early AGAIN before heading to Porcupine Gorge to look at the views (not as good as Kings Canyon though). Visited Australia's Smallest bar, you couldn't swing a cat in it! Started to notice the change from Red Desert to the lush Rainforest of Queensland. Passed by where a cyclone hit a few months back, so loads of houses were missing before going to Millaa Millaa falls for a swim underneath the waterfall. We even got to swim behind it. After 3 days of near misses with birds, kangaroos and an emu and the stunning views we finally arrived back in Cairns.
