This is a Nene which is becoming rare and there are signs up on the roads for drivers to be careful not to hit any. Interestingly we saw a sign to be aware of donkeys crossing a road over a two mile stretch at dawn and dusk. This is similar to deer warnings in the Scottish Highlands !!!

Here is a view of Mauna Loa from the top of Mauna Kea. We were lucky not to suffer any altitude sickness being at this height. These are in the north part of the Island. Tomorrow we go to the south part where the most recent volcanic activity is.

As well as the main volcano there are smaller cones all over the area. These in this photo are very near the top.

On the top of Mauna Kea is one of the most powerful telescopes in the world and they have many many outer space discoveries from here.

Another great day and a few firsts. We drove from sea level to the top of Mauna Kea, the highest point of Hawaii at 13746ft. Mauna Kea is slightly higher than Mauna Loa which most people have heard of. These are the highest free standing mountains in the world, when you consider about 20,000ft of them are below sea level.
