After 13 hours and 2 planes later we've finally arrived in Bangkok!..we got a cab from the airport and it took us about half an hour and only cost £7! It was probably the equivalent from heathrow into central London and I'm pretty sure that the metre In my taxi would go a lot more than that!...We then arrived at our hotel to find that we couldn't check in for another 5 hours so we thought we'd make the most of the first morning and of course our 1st stop was.......burger king! :)
I feel like everybody is out to con us at the moment but I'm sure we will find out what is believable or not! A taxi driver offered to take us on a tour of a few temples for a couple of hours and wait for us each time for 10baht each! That's 19p!...it seemed to good to be true so after trying to get away from him (they are very persuasive people) we thought better of it and walked to the Golden Palace temple instead!
It took us around 20minutes to reach the temple, by this time it was midday and very hot so we'd already opted for a tuk tuk on the way back!
Everyone was outside faffing around as they obviously weren't aware of the dress code (long trousers and covered shoulders) There was a Thai equivalent to Del Boy outside selling funky Elephant pattered trousers which everyone looked real trendy in :/..
The palace is made up of many similar styled buildings. Very gold, jeweled and peaceful. It's used for the Kings ceremonial occasions.
We stayed for about 2hours, looking a at all of the buildings. Some you weren't aloud to take pictures of the inside (although Matt tried his best). We got our tuk tuk back to the hotel.. This was an experience. Weaving through busy traffic and in bike lanes. We made it back to the hotel in one piece and had a few hours nap to tide us over for the night, as we had hardly slept for 2nights.
We made our way out at 12pm to Khoa San road (the next road, so we knew we could stagger back :)) This was crazy with clothes and food stalls during the day and mad with banging music, street dancing and sheesha during the night. We got our first pad Thai from a woman on a stall and started on the Chang.
Somehow after a few beers Matt got brave and wanted to eat all the bugs and fried animals he could (2 crickets and a frog) I tried a meal worm and it wasn't too bad. Defiantly won't be getting drunk enough to try a fried cockroach though.
Overall we had an awesome first day in Bangkok and can't wait for the next few days!!
