I know it's a long way off, but you're going to enjoy New Zealand when you get there. We only toured the South Island and it was amazing. Great to see that you are both missing us all so much! A colleague at work said you should be able to change your Beijin flight to Hong Kong and then you do not need the visa and you will not lose the flight cost.
