Sam the all star Trecker
We arrived at Palm Springs quite late but still had time to hit the gym and do 100 lengths in the pool before bed (Having exercising facilities really becomes quite a novelty when you have been travelling and staying in hostels etc)! The next morning we sunbathed pretty much all day but the heat was just unbearable so we spent most of the time in the pool. We got chatting to a load of lads who were staying at the hotel and found out that they have been living there for the Baseball season and their opening game was that night!! After some more chatting we managed to persuade them to get us tickets to the game that night and therefore delayed our trip to the OC for just another day. The game was so much fun. It started at 7 and we arrived and sat surrounded by proper baseball fans who found it hard to believe that we had been invited along by the team! Palm Springs wasn't your proper holiday destination for people outside of the USA so everyone was facinated by the fact that we came from the UK. As the game started (and we didn't have a clue what the rules were) we started drinking and the night progressed and became funnier and funnier. We started shouting and cheering along with the others and the atmosphere was ace. We were definately the heart and sole of the party. When a strike out (i think it was called) happened then everyone had to rush to the bar to get their one dollar beer. It was a hoot. We started talking to more and more people and one of the organisers asked us if in between innings (i think) we would like to join in a hula hoop comp. Of course we said yes and we had to stand in a line (me, Vicky and a load of kids) and hula until the last one was standing. I was shocking and went out at the beginning but Vicky and a 9 year old boy were head to head til the very end. Vicky ended up winning and got a piggy bank for her success which she gave to the boy as we thought he was going to cry. We ended up having our picture taken with the mascot for the local paper and at the end of the game actually had a reporter come and interview us for a story. We did think we took the emphasis away from the game a little but it was all fun. A guy asked me to go and get an autograph from no 30 called Cody. I said I would and quite tipsy I went down to the mascot (a large goat) and asked him where Cody was. Of course he just shook his head as he couldn't speak, being a goat and all, but I whispered in his ear that it was alright he could speak to me as I knew he wasn't a goat really!! He just laughed to himself and walked off. I found Cody in the pitt waiting to go on and passed the book through the fence for him to sign. He already knew who the UK girls were and when passing back the book also passed back three signed baseballs from the whole team for me and the girls! The guy was very excited about the autograph and everyone was even more excited about our signed baseballs! The Mascot came and sat between us for the rest of the game and when the game was over we went and joined the guys on the field! Then we waited for the guys and got a lift back in their big posh trucks to the hotel. By this point the three of us were very wobbly and did some dancing in the lifts on the way up to our room. We ate some food and then headed on out with the guys into town. The night was great fun and the guys were a good laugh. We can't wait to see the newspaper articles. I never new a baseball game could be so much fun. By the way the guys won which was great. The next morning with sore heads we headed for the OC as originally planned.
