Route 66 to Barstow
The guys from Williams gave us a few ideas of stops on the way from Williams to Death Valley along the 66. He mentioned a place called the Grand Canyon Caverns which is a dry cave. We are so glad we stopped. It was such a cool place. 200ft below the surface in an elevator to explore the cavern and see the hotel room which cost $800 per night. It took us around an hour to explore with our tour guide Ben. It is also one of 3 nuclear fallout shelters in the US which can hold 4000 people. The government sent them water, candy, crispbread and a toilet facility for 2 weeks but no torches so you will have to fumble in the dark. There was a four toed sloth fossil found and a mummified bobcat in the cave. I wonder what else is in the walls of the rocks down there.
We have a lot of miles to cover today so made lunch on the road and our GPS got us confused AGAIN - Pulled up for the night at Barstow KOA were robbed in daylight for $46 for the night. Luckily for them we needed to use the laundromat.
I need to make another note of our microwave dinners, they have been so tasty and for $2 each is a steal! Last night we had roast turkey with veggies and mash & chicken fettucine for a total of $4.50 it amazes us each time we have them.
