San Francisco - Santa Cruz
Heading to Santa Cruz today. The weather is quite overcast again. Along the way we noticed plenty of strawberry fields with lots of pickers and their ponchos. We arrived at the KOA (kampgrounds of America) and settled in nicely. It's quite a relaxing little place with lots of trees and squirrels roaming freely. We lit a fire and had some time to relax. Some neighbours arrived which took half an hour to park his double axle van. it was quite entertaining.
Mick became a bit unwell so we headed to bed early. Maybe he was crook from exhaust fumes from next door but who knows.
Thursday 4/4
I've twisted his arm again to go zip lining today at the Santa Cruz Redwoods. I saw it ages ago back home and its just 30minutes from here. It's a good opportunity to catch some of the forest that we missed.
We had a great time zipping through the Redwood forest. - cousin of the sequoia tree which is the largest living specimen in the world. Cousin will have to do as we missed the Sequoias turn off. The redwoods are taller but the sequoias - some can be 5ft wide and hundreds of yrs old.
Our tour guides requested a guestimate of us in ft until I said we don't use feet as a measurement in Aus. They were very kind attempting to convert ft to metres for us after that.
After the zipping we headed down to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk where there was lots of volleyball nets, restaurants and there is a theme park! Now that is my kind of beach!! Unfortunately we didn't have time to ride the rollercoasters but it was worth the trip just to see the theme park on the beach.
Afterwards we decided to hit the road. Down the Pacific Coast Highway to Morro Bay. As we drove along the ocean it was a magical view down past the Big Sur national park while the sun was going down. It was quite lovely and there was lots of Elephant Seals along the coastline. They were all snuggling so tightly and calling out to each other. It really sounded like they were burping - ewwwww no wonder they carry such a foul smell.
We stopped the night in Morrow Bay it was hard to find a place to stay & all the parks were full throughout the big sur being school holidays I guess. We snuck into a little corner of a rv park late about 9pm. We hit the road early In the morning, the park manager possibly didn't even know we popped by but we left some money for him. We hope he found it! We decided we would head straight back to LA to pack up the rv give it a clean & wash our gear ready for our departure to New York on Monday.
