Today was a big driving day to Appalachian mountains. We drove a few hours and arrived to have a look at the Appalachian trail - a famous walking path that is about 2000 miles long through the mountains. Apparently a lot of people walk it and we were hoping to see some people and see how long they've been walking but the fog from the rain was so thick we couldn't see much and didn't stay long. After our picnic we embarked on the hike - which I was dreading after being warned that although only 1.5 miles - it was very steep. Yay. About a quarter of the way along though, some of the group in front shouted back to us that there was a bear and to my left across a little stream was a baby black bear just foraging around in the leaves! I felt so lucky to have seen one and everyone went silent trying to get pictures until Molly said that was the complete wrong thing to do. We were supposed to make noise and walk away quickly to scare it off and she also was worries the mum might have been around somewhere. The rest of the hike down to a waterfall was pleasant and I just about survived the walk back up! It all felt worth it for the bear. The next 5.5 hours were spent in the van making our way down to Tennessee where would camp. Luckily, for an extra 8 dollars each - which we were willing to pay - the man at the campsite offered to upgrade us to wooden cabins due to the expected thunder storm! We've never been so happy and it felt pretty emotional knowing we would have beds and a roof and electricity and air con! It's amazing night what a couple of days camping can do! So we had burgers for dinner, I bought wine for everyone and we split the cost and we sat under our little fairy-lighted eating area and had a chilled evening.
