Today was the last day of having the car. The trip from Bruges to Amsterdam was about 3 hours so we arrived in time for a late lunch at Café Kalkhoven. The café was about a 10 minute walk from the B&B and served the best cheeseburgers I have tasted.
Before we got to the accommodation, we all praised Europcar and were soo grateful we booked our car with them as they drove us from their depot to the hotel. We thought Bruges roads were scary but Amsterdam took it to a whole new level. Cars have to give way to the pedestrians and bikes....so they have no caution. They trust the cars to get out of their way - so glad none of us were driving.
We found a canal cruise that was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. Such an old city. There was a house that was only 1 metre wide!!! Many of the houses were crooked and some of the decorations were very usual.
For dinner we did our normal....lets see what trip advisor recommends... Unfortunately it was a bit further than we thought and to get there we passed what we thought was probably the REAL Red Light District. So we stopped at a different restaurant that was so laid back they didn't come near us!! We eventually found a nice little place where the host found us a table inside and some lovely beers. I ordered raw beef without realising it...Damn my poor linguistic skills!!!!
After dinner mum and Dave went off by themselves, we thought we would visit the Red Light District. It was very touristy. There were the windows that you hear about. They ask that people don't take photos. Most of the ladies looked sad and/or desperate. Maybe if it wasn't Saturday night. But then again most of the crowd was American tourists.
We visited a true Amsterdam coffeeshop, frequented by locals -not many tourists - The Greenhouse Coffeeshop. Quite a different experience but not uncomfortable. More uncomfortable was needing a toilet at the Grasshopper Hotel and having to go inside!!!
