Ross and Natalie's Travel Journal
GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!!!!
Ho Chi Min City which today is the old Saigon is a clean, vibrant, buzzing and friendly place and we love it, it really is fantastic!! We can't come to a figure but there are millions of motorcycles here and it is pretty complicated and challenging to cross a road in Saigon. They have traffic lights but no one seems to care...just keep going! The shopping is amazing. We went to two department stores...it felt like being in House of Frazer (got a bit homesick at this stage). The Vietnamese people are very friendly and have no bad feeling towards the West after the war, this is amazing.
In Saigon we went on a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels. During the American War the district of Cu Chi supported North Vietnam (the communists called the Viet Cong). To protect themselves the Viet Cong dug tunnels under ground that went 15m deep and on for 250km and some VC even lived in these tunnels for 26 years. We got a chance to crawl through a tunnel of 3m deep for 35 m in length and then 6m deep and 20m in length. It is a tight fit, dark, stuffy and not for any one with a bit of claustrophobia!! It gives you an insight of how strong the Communist movement where and how desperate they where to stay alive. We visited rubber tree plantation and a rice paper factory for all those spring rolls we eat. We visited the War Remembrance museum which had horrific pictures of deformities in births and children after the Americans sprayed chemicals in war times.
The following day Arsenal lost the Champions league and Ross drowned his sorrows with beer and Vietnamese wine!!
