Ross and Gabs Travels
We travelled 365kms today to get to Cobar. We usually don't like to travel that far in a day, but along the Kidman Way there is little choice. The country we travelled through is pretty boring, no houses to be seen, no animals other than wild goats. From Griffith to here there was one town called Hillston and one sort of stop over place called Mount Hope with a little pub and that was all. We noticed several caravans parked there looking like they were there for the rest of the day and night and we were tempted, but decided to keep going. We keep ourselves entertained listening to audio tapes. the one we started today is "What the Night Knows" by Dean Koontz. I thought it was a thriller, but it turns out that not only is it a thriller but it is about the supernatural as well. very exciting and spooky too.
When we finally arrived at the Cobar Caravan Park it is like an oasis. Lovely green grass, with large sites and beautifully clean and modern amenity blocks. We have booked for two days.
Sunday 29th July
Went to have a look around today. First we went to visitors centre which is in a lovely old building which looked like convent to me. but it turns out it was the administration centre for the Cobar mines in its heyday. A really beautiful building on the outside. Cobar has three mines mining several resources the main one being copper, but they also mines silver, gold, lead and zinc. We went to a lookout where you could look down into the pit and the big tunnel entrance down the bottom where the miners go in trucks to go underground. I took lots of pictures so will download some later. We went and had a look at the public pool which was very big with lots of umbrellas around the grounds. It looked very nice. We also went shopping for some meat and a couple of groceries. Very expensive! The only place open for lunch was Subway so that's what we had. We had Chinese for tea, just fried rice and some dim sims, not that nice, but we didn't have to cook it so that was a bonus. Tomorrow we will drive to Back of Bourke which is only 167kms away. We will stay at a park called Kidman's Camp.
