Namaste,
So this will be my last blog entry, i know, how are you all going to cope without them. Tabbi and I left Amritsar this morning, and got a 10 hour train back to Delhi. Our flights are tomorrow and we both arrive back around 6pm.
So we left McLoed Ganj and living in the clouds behind at 3.45am, and got a 8 hour bus to Amritsar. Amritsar was very hot and sticky, much more like the india I know. On the day we arrived, we lazed in our room in the air conditioning and slept. The day after we went to the Golden Temple, the most important temple in the world for Sikhs. It was truley breathtaking. It is a marble building with a huge lake in the middle along with the central golden temple in the middle, which is actually coated in pure gold. We generally walked around and took in the amazingness of it all, and as being one of the only westerners there (in fact one of the only westerners in the whole of Amritsar), i commented to Tabbi how weird it was that no one was asking for our photos. Only then to be surrounded by a hoard of Indians wanting pictures and wanting to put their children on my lap. They also like to try and force their children to speak the little English they know to us, which the children are always very embarressed about, especially as the parents wont let them go until they have mumbled something! In the evening we went to another area of the city to find food. The next day we went back to the temple, and since the temple is supposed to be a place were all are equal, everyone is allowed in with no charge, and they also prepare meals for people who go there, some 80,000 meals prepared each day. So we did this too, and sat in a large hall with several thousand others and were given our free food and drink, and was pretty amazing. All the people who prepare the meals and cleanup are volunteers, and it is run with military precision. I got some pics, but only on Tabbis camera which i cant upload onto here, so if you want to see i will show you when you get back, or you can watch it on Michael Palins BBC documentary he did about the himalays. In the evening we went to the Pakistan border, to watch the famour border closing ceremony. Unfortunatly we didnt get to see a great deal, as the crowd getting in was so huge, and i was a little overwhelmed i turned into a complete wimp and had an asthma attack and cried, so tabbi and i left the queue to get in, only not to be able to see when we got there. but there is a link so you can watch it that michael palin did for the BBC. should wwatch it its pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9y2qtaopbE
Anyhoo, better go and get some sleep before my flight tomorrow, hope you have all enjoyed reading my blog, if anyone has been reading it! Looking forward to seeing you all when i get back.
Lots of love Rosie
