The travel to Amalfi was a little hard and not so pleasant but it was well worth the ride because at the end was a beautiful island filled with lemons, with the most astounding view of the deep blue ocean. Amalfi is on the very edge of a rock so to get up there we drove up a steep windy road on the edge of a cliff, with no railing, just the sea on one side a rock on the other. I felt like if I were to lean over a little to the wrong side we would go plummeting down into the sea. The windiness and altitude also made me feel sick to the stomach. The drive lasted forever but once we got to the hotel I was so exited.
The hotel is white and peaks just out over the sea, once we got there our rooms were not quite ready so me and my grandparents played crazy eights in the lobby as we waited. Once our rooms were ready we started to move in but my super mother, with her very good nose, smelled mold in the room. Then we changed rooms until there was a good one and moved in, by that time we were done for the night and had dinner at the hotel and went to bed.
Throughout the next few days we spent walking through the town admiring the beautifulness of the two main features of Amalfi, the sea and the lemons. Sometimes we would lounge by the hotel pool. It was outdoors and looked just over the sea. At one point there was a steep ladder that went straight into the sea. The only people brave enough to go in were my dad and I. He had to hold me because the strong and mighty waves could have crashed me right into rock. It was a little chili but not to bad. The sea was defiantly not warm enough for my grandma though. The place was so active there were always things to do.
One day we got a boat and took it through the island relaxing and swimming. The weather was wonderful and the boat was so much fun. We would drive through the islands getting an up close look. At one spot we stopped to go swimming. The water was the perfect temperature. I was one of the first to go swimming, if you know my father he just dives right in. Then my mother went in. It felt so great to be swimming in the ocean, except that there were hundreds of jellyfish. That is one of the reasons my sister Annabella did not stay long in the water. My mother got stung by a big jellyfish, me being the kind person I am offered to pee on her, she declined.
Another day we went out into the town, there were so many cute little shops, we went down to the marina where they were loading boats and fish. The town, like Rome, had stone roads and there were not very many cars so many people walked on the road. We walked up to a hill in which we came upon a lemon farm. We met the owners and they walked us through the farm. At one point I was walking with lemons on either side of me and above me. There we tasted lemon drinks and lemon cake that they hand made. As we continued walking we came to the top where there was a little balcony and we over looked all of the beautiful lemons. This is where I came to love the smell of lemon cello. The lemon farm was such a great experience; the family was so tight they spent there days working on the farm together and making cakes and drinks out of their fresh grown lemons.
Now it was time to go back we were heading to Rome for one night to catch a flight back. Again we had to drive the car back on the windy road at the edge of a cliff. But this time we had a driver, Peoter. He was an interesting man, funny, big talker. I had no issue with him, until the car broke down. Poor Peoter started to freak out, we were fine but Peoter started sweating like no mans business. He tried to call a car company to pick us up but they could not be reached. Peoter's solution was to call a toe truck and have the toe truck drive us while we were in the car. My mother said he was crazy; she took matters into her own hands. We called a taxi to come pick us up and they took us to Naples where we waited for a new Rental car to take us to Rome. As we drove off with the taxi we left sweaty Peoter there standing next to a steaming car.
Amalfi was perfect. I had so many great experiences there. The drive up and back was a little hard but it was well worth it. Between seeing the amazing lemon farm and the gorgeous sea the trip was truly unbelievable. Amalfi is such a special place and I feel so lucky to be able to go there.
