Today the world is my school and my classroom is Siem Reap. I am going to do a program called caring for Cambodia (CFC) where you give and do great things for Cambodian kids. The first thing I noticed is how amazing it is that they have such good manners. All of the kids know how to say thank you and they all use it as much as they can! They are so young to have those kinds of manners. Some people that know English that are that young don't have manners like this. They are like ages 4-12 and I know their first language is Cambodian. What I mean is they are good polite people. Their manners are really good but they have something that they are even better at. And that is being happy and poor. I was really amazed about how happy they were and they sang so nice when their life is very poor. They mainly just get a little breakfast then a couple bananas at night. I still don't think you get how poor they are so here is a better description. The Cambodian kids are SO VERY POOR. The school is not as poor because they have the company Caring for Cambodia (CFC) working with them. That means people like me come and give money so they are still poor but they have real walls and those things. Their houses at home are like umbrellas so the school is much better than their house! That is mainly why they go to school for breakfast and during their break they stay at school and not go home. The very surprising thing is they are very happy even though they are VERY poor!
After enjoying what they had at their school, serving them their breakfast and seeing how happy they look it's time to get to work but before that I just had to get excited for one little thing. I have never ever painted a wall, just paper, and now was my first time and I was more excited than I have ever been! I was painting 2 trashcans and a hut. I was as happy and excited as the Cambodian kids were when I was playing with them! They literally stared at me when I was teaching them all the games that I play at my school. I was laughing and they did the same right by my side! (SO MUCH FUN!) We held hands and ran and laughed and played. This is how the hut came along. I painted a little but not too much just enough to have great fun! These kids are so playful! I was just painting a hut and I saw them laughing and I knew I just had to play! I taught them B-I-N-G-O, hopscotch, red light green light, duck duck goose, rock paper scissors, and that game where you put a rock or something in your hand behind your back then the other people have to guess which hand the thing is in! We had so much fun playing I can't tell you how cute they were! But it just kept on getting better I moved on to our next task and they joined me again! I was just doing my business and painting a trashcan and my sister (World Rings Bell) was doing it with me but she bailed out and put the paintbrush next to the trashcan. Then all the little kids came along and took it then started painting with me. At first I thought it was annoying then I changed my mind and thought it was cute.
Then the time came where I had to move on and leave. I sure was heartbroken when I left. The kids were all playing with us then school came and we went goodbye. But that was only to the little kids. Then I went and did a good deed by giving the high school $800 worth of books which probably means that there was more than 800 books! At first when my mom said we were giving the high school some books I thought it was just a couple but there was $800 worth of books! I could tell that the high schoolers were very exited because they did not have many books so they have read all the books in their library so they were VERY exited! I didn't think the librarian was though because she had a lot of books to put away!
I want to thank all my family and friends and ACS Cobham International School for donating money and backpacks. I especially want to thank 3A and Mr Den Hartog for making cards that I was the one to deliver right into the hands of the Cambodian kids. They hugged them next to their heart until they could go back to their class and read them. I took a picture of every single child getting one of the cards so will post that when I get some time and you can find your card and the child it went to!

Aunt Amy Hi Rosie!! Such a wonderful story to hear about your visit to the school in Cambodia. It sounds like you are just absorbing all of these different cultures and the ways that they adapt to what they know - pretty impressive, right? Money or no money, happiness will shine through!! I saw the pictures your mom sent and you all looked so happy sharing your time, talent, and treasures with those children - you are blessed to have such an experience!!! Lots of love and hugs!! XOXO AA
Gran Gautney Hi Rosie, Boy, that was some lesson - that children can be quite happy and poor at the same time!! It sounds like it made you so happy to be connecting with them and bringing them gifts of time and energy!! I'm sure they appreciated the monetary gifts too. I am pretty impressed too with their expressions of gratitude which seems like it came from their hearts! Bless you for delivering our gifts to them!! Peace and Love, Gran
